Telecommunications Career? What do you know?  (Answers: 2)
 Careers & Employment
I want to start my career in the Telecommunications field. I would like to hear any advice from anyone who knows anything (about this field, ofcourse). For example..what type of courses to take,Do I even need any college courses?
If you're interested in working in the field then your best bet is to get a degree in Electrical Engineering. I took some telecommunications courses and they are
definitely geared toward those with a background in EE. Otherwise you'll need a good background in calculus, physics and statistics as well as some programming.
You should also try and decide if you're interested in voice communication, computer communication or wireless. There's an online book at
http://web.archive.org/web/20040413074912/www.ericsson.com/support/telecom/index.shtml that might give you an idea of what's involved and what interests you.
Telecommunications setup for internet cafe?  (Answers: 2)
 Computer Networking
If I have an area of 400 square feet to work with, including two rooms and a counter, should I connect 5 computers I am starting with via a file server, terminal-to-host or client server approach? Also, which network switching device and protocol could I use for the five computers on the wireless access and the LAN ? I currently only have the area wired for phone service, not cable as of yet...which media type would be the best choice as far as cabling?Finally...What Internet service type would be best and what should I buy in reference to a telecommunications device?Any help would be appreciated ;)Thanks in advance!
you ask alot, so i will try to cover the basics.if you have 2 rooms, the front room should be the 'public' room, and the back room should be the server room and have
limitted physical access (ie: only individuals who know what they are doing and have permission should have physical access to the 2nd room)depending on what you
want your users to experience, i would suggest terminal-host connections for the most security, but in reality, a file server-internet proxy would be most
effective.i would use either a switched network hub and then either a wired router or a wireless router, depending on your comfort level either a)running cables or
b) securing wireless connectivity. wired would be easier to manage overall.as far as media/cabling, i would suggest cat6 ethernet cabling.contact your local
telephone company, your local cable provider, and check here for other potential providers http://www.thelist.com/you will want to ask them 1) about business account
rates & speeds 2) about restrictions since, in essence, you will be reselling their bandwidth. 3) if they will provide the uplink hardware (ie: our provider gave us
the T1 hardware with our contract.) you will want to determine what sort of server software you will need. you will need to manage security (primary need! - a
hardware firewall helps alot! - you will need antivirus, anti-spyware/adware, spam management, anti-keyloggers, etc), users accounts, usage time for each user,
bandwidth allocations (you don't want 1 user hogging 80% of your available bandwidth!), some way to manage billing, a way to make sure that software on the computer
is licensed (and to be alerted and able to remove non-licensed software), a way to severely limit access of users to the essential files on the machines they will be
using (not to mention no access to anything but a shared folder on the server), some way to manage and maintain a schedule of users (ie: mary from 1-3pm on Tues, bob
from 3-4 on Tues, etc)i don't support (or dislike) this site/product, but the do provide some useful information. There are other similar products available
elsewhere.http://www.smartlaunch.net/Webpages/About/Top10.aspx
Telecommunications training?  (Answers: 1)
 Careers & Employment
what are the best certifications and training (online and in class) to get in the telecommunications field. I am currently a telecom manager at a 1500 employee department and wish to go up higher in my field. I am getting a AAS degree right now. Just wondering what other training would help me get up higher.
You can probably go one or two routes here: engineering or management. If you want to work with actual telecommunications technology, you should already have an
engineering degree. But if you want to run a department, you're probably looking at some kind of management degree, probably an MBA.
