I`m a 10th grade girl and am interested in engineering-particularily mechanical. My math and science background is very good-I have always been in the advanced courses. I`m trying to decide if I should go into engineering because I long to design and improve our world, but I had disliked a robotics and inventions class that I took. I`m not in love with math, but I`m fascinated by machines and how they work. What`s it really like being a mecha engineer?
You long to design and improve the world for other people, you're fascinated by machines and how they work, and you have a strong science background. You're not in
love with math, but willing and able to apply it when necessary. Honestly, you sound a lot like most of the engineers (and engineering students) that I know,
including myself. The field of mechanical engineering is so incredibly broad, it would be almost impossible to adequately describe it here. Many ME careers have no
involvement whatsoever with robotics, and there's also the possibility that the class you took was designed to entice those not already interested, rather than to
challenge those (like you) who are.The links below should help to answer your "what's it all about?" questions, and that's not just me copping out. There's some
great stuff on them, including video clips of interviews with women engineers. Feel free to email if you need more info. There's a severe and growing shortage of
engineers in the U.S., and only about 10% of the engineering workforce is female. This needs to change, and I hope you'll be part of the solution. :)::EDIT:: I just
pulled the February issue of Mechanical Engineering magazine out of my mail slot, and the cover story happens to be about what "we" need to do to attract more women
to "our" field. I pasted another link below to the online version of the story. Let me know if you have trouble getting to it, as there may be some sort of
password or IP identification required.

i want to become an engineer when i get big and i think i hsould start working on it now(7th grade). my dad is an engineer and he said i should know algebra the most. i want to know what i need to know in science and math if u have a different answere and some practice problems if u can give me some cool sites. and just to let you knwo i started algebra yesterday. so... can you tell me some stuff about engineering and some stuff i need to know. thanks
If you want to be an engineer, all you have to do is study hard. Learn math and science- especially study Algebra, Calculus, and Physics when you have an
opportunity. There are MANY different fields though, and that will determine what you need to learn. A Bio-tech engineer won't need much Strength of Materials, just
like a Mechanical Engineer won't need to study micro-biology. Don't stress about deciding what you want to do just yet, that's what college is for.Let me give you
one more tip- a very important tip. Keep your nose clean! I mean stay out of trouble. Lots of engineers work in fields where there are security requirements. I in
fact have a Secret-level security clearance. If I had any black marks on my record- drugs, alcohol problems (like drunk driving), or even vandalism, I NEVER would
have passed my FBI screening. In fact, it is well known that if I, and any of my co-workers get arrested and convicted of anything above a low-level misdemeanor,
they will strip the security clearance and fire us. This holds true for ALL major defense contractors, and for many engineers in sensitive fields.Be smart, study
hard, and stay out of trouble. That's how you get to be an engineer.

When a person says they are going to be an engineer? or going into engineering, what exactly does that mean? Bio engineering..etc, etc....
I am an Electrical Engineer. In college we tried to simplify the definition of Engineering. Engineering is the study of how things work, more commonly answering
the large question of Why things work the way they do?. All Engineering is difficult (some more difficult than others), abstract, and at times mind boggling.Civil
Engineering- the study of construction, buildings, roads, landscapes. the study of things that do not move and why things stay together or are able to support other
things without breaking or falling apart. mainly, stress, strain, and moment.Mechanical Engineering- the study of slower moving things. things that move relatively
slower than the speed of light. the study of things that use gears or motors. once again, stress, strain, moment, but also torque.Chemical Engineering or Sometimes
Materials Engineering- the study of the things that make up the materials that we build things with. deals with a large amount of chemistry.Biomedical Engineering-
involves chemistry, biology, and mechanical engineering. studies things that help humans physically or how to more easily implement medicine.Electrical Engineering-
involves the study of things that move really fast, like chemical engineering, involves things that we really can't see without the assistance of abstract
technology. mainly involves the creation of electricity, how we manipulate it, and control it so we can make electronics, or the components that make those
electronics. And I fully agree with akinustun67. it takes a lot of determination, persistance, and patience to become an engineer. If you don't like math and you love
sleep, then engineering is not for you. To try to put it in a different perspective- Upon Final Exams week at a University, a group of liberal arts majors
(non-science related) discuss the difficulty of the exam they just took- how it was multiple choice, fill in the blank, and short answers, or how their math exam
they could use a calculator and there were a lot of short problems to do. Both exams were on a few chapters in their textbooks. In an Engineer's perspective, our
exams are FULL book, without calculator unless we get a really nice teacher. we get a paragraph at the top of a blank sheet of paper, usually get 10 problems to do
in 2 hours, the average individual finishes almost half the problems on an exam which required no sleep for the previous week because having an A the whole semester
doesn't really mean you remember how to do all the types of problems from memory in the 900 page textbook.
